A tick bit Liz Schmitz in her Atlanta yard in 1991. She contracted Lyme disease. Despite no travel history to the northeast, five labs confirmed her diagnosis. Two other tests found Borrelia Burgdorferi DNA. She co-founded and is president of the Georgia Lyme Disease Association. Liz works with medical providers, scientists, politicians, and public health officials. She seeks funding for research in the Southeast. Liz has hosted presentations to communities, medical groups, school students, and scout groups. The Georgia Lyme Disease Association provides patient support and educational/preventative information to create awareness of tick-borne illnesses in the South. GALDA volunteers have submitted proclamations to the governor and hosted Lyme and Tick-borne Disease Awareness Programs at the Georgia State Capitol during Lyme Disease Awareness Month for two consecutive years. Our volunteers have appeared on radio shows, and in newspapers, magazines and television reports.

Libby Matthews married with two daughters, Laura 17, and Anna 14. Since 2009 Libby’s been advocating for her daughter Laura and other individuals diagnosed with a tick-borne illness. When Laura was six years old three ticks bit her while playing in her Birmingham back yard. Despite the absence of a rash, Laura developed numerous symptoms over the next ten years. She was mis-diagnosed many times. When 15, Laura and her mom noticed that she was losing her ability to grasp a pencil, hold a door open, or pull down a paper towel. She also experienced episodes of “blanking out,” without losing consciousness. After taking Laura to a neurologist who diagnosed epilepsy, Libby knew all the symptoms were somehow connected. It was then Libby sought medical attention for Laura out of state. Many tests confirmed the diagnosis of tick-borne infections and the explanation for her symptoms. Laura’s immune system was severely depleted by Babesiosis, Bartonella, and Lyme disease.

Helena Speights, CEO and Founder of GreenCityListings.com, is a wife, mother of two, and currently a full-time employee with the Federal government. She holds a BA in Spanish and a minor in Graphic Design/Illustration from Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, CT. Shortly after graduation, Helena relocated to California, where she was introduced to what she calls the “earthy-crunchy” lifestyle of the Bay Area. She became a vegetarian and a consumer of alternative medicine and natural living. Since relocating to Atlanta, GA in 2005, Helena continued her trek with natural living, enrolling in the Atlanta School of Massage Therapy program. Her challenges in searching for affordable and legitimate natural and organic services within the Metro Atlanta area prompted her to compile a directory of the very services she sought – a one-stop-shop of eco-friendly, natural and holistic services for the green consumer, while giving the under-represented, smaller therapist and green business a dedicated space to display their services. Thus, GreenCItyListings.com was born, growing daily, by leaps and bounds, to the national level.

Lu Pierro has worked in the healing profession since her early twenties. She was a special educator for 30 plus years. Upon her retirement she became a Reiki practitioner and a Life Coach. She says that coaching adults is like teaching kids. It is the same skill set, except you do not have to grade clients on their performance. It was when watching the back-to-back earthquakes of 2010, first in Haiti and then in Chile that Lu was inspired to do something. That something became the birth of Worldwide Holistic Day, a grass roots movement dedicated to educating folk worldwide about Holistic practices and training those who wish to learn.
